How to Humanize AI Text (7 Techniques That Actually Work)

AI writing has tells. Learn the 7 techniques that make robotic drafts sound natural — from killing clichés to fixing rhythm.

AI-generated text has a "smell." Even without running a detector, most readers can feel it: the same polished sentence structures, the same safe transitions, the same words no human would choose twice in one paragraph. The good news is that fixing it is a skill, and it breaks down into repeatable techniques.

1. Kill the AI clichés

Words like delve, furthermore, moreover, tapestry, landscape (as a metaphor), game-changer, revolutionize and leverage are massively overrepresented in AI output. Replace them with plain words: explore, also, plus, mix, big shift, transform, use. One pass of cliché removal changes the texture of a draft more than anything else.

2. Use contractions

AI writes "do not," "it is," "cannot." Humans write "don't," "it's," "can't" — especially in informal and semi-formal writing. Flipping to contractions is a two-second change that removes a huge amount of stiffness.

3. Vary your sentence rhythm

AI loves medium-length sentences, one after another. Humans mix short punches with longer, winding sentences. Read your draft out loud: if every sentence lands with the same thud, break a few up. Fragments are fine. Really.

4. Fix the sentence starters

Count how many sentences begin with "The," "This," or "It." If it's more than a third, rewrite some openers: start with a transition ("That said,"), a question, or just a different subject. Variety here is one of the strongest human signals.

5. Add something only you know

No rewriting trick beats genuine specificity. One concrete example, one personal observation, one odd detail from your experience — AI can't fabricate your lived details convincingly, and readers can feel the difference instantly.

6. Cut the throat-clearing

"It's important to note that," "In today's fast-paced world," "In conclusion" — delete these outright. They add zero information and scream "generated." Start where the meaning starts.

7. Read it out loud

The final test never changes: if a sentence sounds weird spoken, it reads weird too. AI text often passes the eye test and fails the ear test. Five minutes of reading aloud catches what no tool will.

The honest caveat

These techniques make writing better — that's the real goal. But no method guarantees beating AI detectors: tools like Turnitin and GPTZero update constantly, and they sometimes flag genuinely human writing. Write to sound human because your readers are human, not to fool a scanner.
